“If you can make a comedy that works, you tend to stay in that world, because it can be incredibly lucrative,” Wilde tells me. But she wanted a challenge after Booksmart, which isn’t to say she wasn’t nervous about shifting gears. “Sophomore slump is a real thing,” she admits. The focus of her first movie, she says, was “friendship and judgment and exploring insecurity.” The new one “is asking the question of, What are you willing to sacrifice in order to do what’s right? If you really think about it, are you willing to blow up the system that serves you?”
